Instructions after to hernia surgery

Kindly read instructions carefully.

​

  1. You should not carry any weight exceeding 7 kilograms (or 15 pounds) for 6 weeks until the internal wounds heal and the mesh fuses with the body.

  2. It is recommended to practice walking sports daily. Please avoid exercising that requires pressure on the abdominal wall or weight lifting for 6 weeks. After this period, you can start practicing sports gradually. kindly note that it's allowed to climb stairs if you need to.

  3. Avoid sexual intercourse for a month after the operation to prevent the mesh from moving from its place or to avoid any pain in the surgery area.

  4. It is recommended to avoid constipation by eating healthy food full of fiber and drinking more water. In case you need to use any laxatives, use over the counter medications like FORLAX one sachet per day mixing it with water.

Common questions 

​

When can I shower?

Wound plasters are water proof, you can shower 48 hours after surgery on plasters without scrubbing.  you can remove your plasters after that. There is no need to put antiseptic solutions like Betadine or applying another plaster. As for the stitches, cosmetic stitches were used that dissolve under the skin. You can notice remnants of the stitches coming out of the wound after three weeks. This is very normal. You can remove them or leave them to dissolve completely.

 

What is the most appropriate sleeping position?

There is no special position that you must follow after the operation. You can sleep on your back, on your side, or on your stomach. It is also normal to feel some pain when moving from one position to another in the first week after the operation, and it is caused by wounds in the abdominal wall.

Should I abstain from any type of food after the operation?

During the first week of the operation, you can eat normal food, but it is wise not to eat fatty and heavy food in large quantities, but rather choose food that is easy to digest. After that, you can resume your eating habits as it was before the operation and your favourite dishes.

​

Note: It is very normal to notice swelling in the pubic area after the operation. This is normal and does not mean that the hernia will return, especially if the operation was done laparoscopically. This swelling takes weeks to return to normal. for patients undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, swelling can be found in the area of the man’s testicle sac with a change in color in Skin or minor blood collection, there is also no need to worry, as the swelling will subside over the coming weeks

​

Medications prescribed to you.

1- Panadol, two pills every 8 hours for pain when necessary. This is considered the first choice for pain

2-Voltfast sachet mixed with a cup of water and given once a day when there is pain, if necessary, for 3 days only.

​

sometimes antibiotics are prescribed to you. 

​
